Hi, hello. Glad You're Here!
If you've found me, you may be navigating what feels like unchartered waters with the kids you care for.
I can help.
Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Devlopment
I'm mama to many; through biology, adoption, foster care + running an orphan care program in Rwanda.
It took us a decade to recognize that our traditional parenting wasn't working; it was actually preventing our kids from finding healing.
Loving kids who have experienced trauma looks different. I'm here to help.
Maybe you're where we once were: using traditional parenting with sticker charts, time outs and groundings. But those only work for a little while. You feel hopeless + this all feels wrong.
The therapist isn't working; you cannot share with others the craziness that goes down. It feels like comparing apples to oranges. All the online groups, self-help books + professional resources are hard to relate to. It is difficult to finish anything, but it's okay.
We are all becoming.
Faith communities want to support your family, but there seems to be a gap between what you need + what they understand or are capable of doing. Training up staff, volunteers + teachers to come alongside children (+their families) who have experienced trauma isn't hard, but it does require fresh insight.
We can help.
Institutional care is no place for children.

Before "trauma informed" was a catch phrase, I was writing with raw authenticity . I keep our old blog up because it's evidence of how beauty + hope can rise from the darkest spaces and the driest deserts.
From shutting down an abusive orphanage to delivering babies of refugees to connecting with my own children, I have a testimony of HOPE. Finding joy in the dry seasons is possible when we reframe our perspective to see how each connection, each experience shapes + equips us for what God has called us to.
